Why Your Acne Isn’t Going Away: The Link Between Stress and Acne

If you feel like you’ve been doing everything right for your skin, like using the recommended products, drinking more water, trying to clean up your diet, and your acne still isn’t settling, this is for you!

Because the truth is… acne isn’t just a skin problem.

One of the leading causes of acne that I see all the time in clinic and which often gets overlooked is stress.

How Stress Affects Acne: The Link Between Your Nervous System and Skin

Your body doesn’t separate emotional stress from physical stress. To your system, stress is stress.

Whether it’s rushing through the day, constantly thinking about what needs to be done next, skipping meals, not sleeping well, or pushing yourself through exhaustion, your body responds in the same way.

It activates your fight or flight response.

When that happens, your system is focused on getting you through the day. Things like digestion, hormone balance, and skin repair are no longer the priority.

Over time, we start to see that impact in your skin.

What Stress Related Acne Looks Like

When stress becomes ongoing, it starts to affect several systems that directly influence the skin.

  • Cortisol, your main stress hormone, increases. This can lead to higher oil production, which makes breakouts more likely.

  • Skin healing slows down, so spots tend to linger for longer and marks take more time to fade.

  • The skin barrier can become impaired, which often shows up as sensitivity, irritation, or skin that suddenly reacts to products it previously tolerated.

  • Stress can also influence hormone balance, particularly ovulation, which is why it’s so often linked to breakouts around the chin and jaw.

This is what we refer to as stress related acne or cortisol driven acne.

Why Skincare Alone Doesn’t Fix Stress Related Acne

This is where many people feel stuck.

You’re often led to believe that the solution is simply finding the right product. So you try something new, and when that doesn’t work, you try something else.

But if your body is in a constant state of stress, even very good skincare can only do so much.

You may even be causing more harm than good, as layering multiple active products or frequently changing routines can make things more reactive, particularly if the skin barrier is already under strain!

This is why a root cause acne approach becomes so important. It allows you to step back and look at what’s driving the skin, rather than constantly trying to correct it from the outside.

How to Treat Stress Related Acne

The most effective changes are often the least complicated, but they’re also the ones that tend to be overlooked.

  • Supporting your nervous system consistently makes a noticeable difference over time. That might look like creating more regular structure in your day, allowing space to slow down, or reducing the constant pressure to be doing more.

  • Eating regularly and in a way that supports blood sugar balance can also help stabilise hormones.

  • Simplifying skincare, rather than layering multiple strong products, often allows the skin to settle.

  • And sleep, where possible, plays a much bigger role in skin health than most people realise.

None of this is about doing everything perfectly. It’s about giving your body the conditions it needs to regulate.

A Root Cause Approach to Adult Acne Treatment

If your skin feels like it’s constantly flaring, reacting, or not improving despite your efforts, it’s rarely because you’re doing nothing. More often, it’s because no one has shown you the full picture.

Skin is closely connected to what’s happening internally, and your nervous system is a big part of that. When we take that into account, things tend to make a lot more sense and progress becomes much more steady.
