What Does a Holistic Acne Specialist Actually Do?

7 min read

Four years at college, another year at university, a first-class honours degree in Advanced Skin Techniques, and here I am trying to explain what I actually do for a living on the internet!

I'm Louise, The Scottish Skin Specialist, and I specialise in helping women understand and manage persistent acne using a holistic, barrier-first approach.

Now, before you hear the word holistic and picture me sitting cross-legged with a green juice, telling you to manifest clear skin, let me explain what that actually means.

Because there's a lot more to treating acne than finding the right spot cream. And there's definitely more to it than cutting out chocolate and hoping for the best.

What Is a Holistic Acne Specialist?

A holistic acne specialist looks at your skin as part of the bigger picture, rather than treating every breakout as an isolated problem.

Your skin doesn't operate independently from the rest of your body. Hormones, stress, nutrition, sleep and the condition of your skin barrier can all influence how it behaves. So while a good skincare routine is important, sometimes we need to look beyond what's sitting on your bathroom shelf to understand why your acne keeps coming back.

For example, maybe your skin was relatively clear until you stopped taking the contraceptive pill. Maybe you've started getting painful breakouts around your chin and jawline every month. Or perhaps your acne seems to get worse whenever life gets particularly stressful.

These patterns can tell us something useful about your skin.

That doesn't mean every spot has some mysterious underlying cause that needs investigating. Acne is a complex inflammatory skin condition, and there isn't always one simple explanation!

But understanding your individual circumstances helps us make more informed decisions about how to manage it.

And that's really what holistic acne treatment is about.

Why I Don't Believe in Throwing Everything at Acne

If you've struggled with acne for years, there's a good chance you've tried just about everything.

The expensive cleanser. The serum everyone on TikTok was raving about. The prescription treatment that helped for a while. The exfoliating toner that promised to clear your pores but somehow left your face feeling like it had been scrubbed with sandpaper.

And when none of those things give you the results you're hoping for, the temptation is to try something stronger.

But here's the thing.

Your skin isn't something we need to fight with.

One of the biggest problems I see is people trying to treat acne so aggressively that they end up compromising their skin barrier in the process.

Your skin barrier is responsible for helping your skin retain moisture and protecting it from external irritants. When it's disrupted, your skin can become dehydrated, sensitive, inflamed and much less tolerant of the products you're using.

So now you're dealing with acne and irritated skin. Brilliant.

This is why my approach is always barrier-first!

In 2026, I was awarded Prologic Skincare's Skin Clarity Case Study Award for the results achieved with one of my acne clients using a patient, barrier-first approach, which was a lovely reminder that you don't need to throw the kitchen sink at someone's skin to make meaningful progress!

So, What Actually Happens When You Work With Me?

First of all, we're going to have a proper conversation about your skin.

Not a quick glance at your spots followed by a recommendation for whichever serum happens to be popular that month.

I want to understand what's been going on, because two people can have acne that looks very similar but have completely different experiences and contributing factors.

We Start With Your Skin's History

When did your acne first appear? Has it always been there, or did it suddenly turn up in your thirties?

Does it get worse around your period? Did your skin change after stopping contraception? Have you tried prescription treatments before? And what about your skincare routine?

I want to know what you're using, how often you're using it and whether you've noticed any changes.

Because if you've spent the last three years trying every acne product known to man, I don't think you need another person telling you to wash your face twice a day.

We need to understand what's actually happening!

We Look at What's Going on Beyond Your Skin

This is where the holistic side of things comes in.

Depending on your circumstances, we'll look at factors such as hormonal changes, stress, nutrition, sleep and lifestyle habits. And before anyone panics, no, I'm not going to tell you that your acne is your fault because you ate a biscuit or had a stressful week.

That's not how skin works!

But these factors can influence acne in different ways, and understanding which ones might be relevant to you can help us make sensible changes.

Stress is a good example.

I talk a lot about the importance of managing stress, and believe me, I've had to take some of my own advice recently.

I've made some big changes in my own life, including downsizing my clinic and learning that constantly pushing myself isn't necessarily something to be proud of. Turns out practising what you preach is quite important. Who would've thought?

But I'm also very aware that telling someone to 'just stress less' is about as helpful as telling someone with acne to 'just stop getting spots'. The point isn't to add more pressure. It's to understand what's happening and find realistic ways to support your skin.

We Get Your Skincare Routine Working for You

I love skincare. Obviously. I've spent a ridiculous number of years studying it. But that doesn't mean I think everyone needs a twelve-step routine. In fact, quite the opposite!

One of the first things I look at is whether your skincare routine is supporting your skin barrier or constantly irritating it.

Are you using too many exfoliating ingredients? Are you introducing new products every few weeks? Is your skin feeling tight, sensitive or uncomfortable?

Sometimes we need to simplify things before we can make progress.

A gentle cleanser, a suitable moisturiser, daily SPF and carefully selected treatments can be a much better starting point than layering five different active ingredients and hoping they all get along.

Good skincare isn't about how many products you're using. It's about whether those products are right for your skin.

And just because an ingredient is popular doesn't mean your skin needs it.

Can Holistic Acne Treatment Help With Hormonal Acne?

Hormonal acne is something I work with regularly, particularly in women dealing with persistent adult acne.

You might be experiencing deep, painful breakouts around your chin and jawline, spots that appear around your period or acne that's developed after coming off hormonal contraception.

Hormones play an important role in regulating oil production, so hormonal fluctuations can contribute to breakouts.

But something I always want women to understand is that having hormonal acne doesn't automatically mean there's something wrong with your hormones.

And despite what you might have read online, we can't diagnose a hormonal imbalance simply by looking at where your spots appear. But what we can do is explore your skin's history, identify patterns and look at the factors that might be influencing your breakouts.

If you're experiencing other symptoms, such as irregular periods, that could suggest an underlying medical condition, I'll always recommend speaking with your GP.

Holistic acne treatment isn't about replacing medical advice. It's about making sure we're looking at your skin from all the relevant angles.

Will I Have to Give Up Dairy, Sugar and Everything Else That Makes Life Worth Living?

Absolutely not.

Honestly, the amount of nonsense circulating online about acne and food is enough to give anyone a headache.

Apparently, depending on which influencer you ask, the secret to clear skin is giving up dairy, gluten, sugar, coffee, carbohydrates and possibly enjoying yourself altogether. But the relationship between nutrition and acne isn't that straightforward.

Research suggests that certain dietary patterns may influence acne in some people, particularly diets with a high glycaemic load. But that doesn't mean everyone with acne needs to eliminate entire food groups.

And it certainly doesn't mean one chocolate bar is responsible for your latest breakout.

When we look at nutrition, I'm interested in your overall eating habits and whether there are any realistic changes that could support your skin.

Not creating a list of forbidden foods that leaves you feeling guilty every time you fancy a bit of cake.

Because life is stressful enough without being scared of your dinner.

How Long Does Holistic Acne Treatment Take to Work?

I wish I could give you a lovely straightforward answer here.

Unfortunately, skin doesn't work like Amazon Prime.

Acne develops through processes happening beneath the skin's surface, which means it takes time for changes to become visible.

If your skin barrier is irritated, you might notice improvements in how comfortable your skin feels relatively quickly once we simplify your routine, but reducing active breakouts often takes several weeks or months, depending on your skin and the treatment approach.

And progress isn't always a straight line. You might have a few really good weeks, followed by a breakout that makes you question everything. That doesn't automatically mean the approach isn't working.

This is why patience and consistency are so important! Rather than changing your entire routine every time a spot appears, we look at how your skin is responding over time and make adjustments when they're actually needed.

And while I can't promise you'll never get another spot again, I can help you understand your skin and feel more confident about how you're looking after it.

Looking for a Holistic Acne Specialist in Glasgow or Lanarkshire?

I'm Louise, The Scottish Skin Specialist, based in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire.

After four years at college, another year at university and graduating with a first-class honours degree in Advanced Skin Techniques, I've spent my career helping people understand their skin and find approaches that work for them.

My focus is on holistic, barrier-first skin treatments, particularly for women dealing with persistent adult acne, hormonal breakouts and skin that just doesn't seem to respond to the usual advice.

And if you're not local to Glasgow or Lanarkshire, you can still work with me.

My Your Clear Path programme is a 12-week online acne programme designed to help you understand your skin, simplify your routine and receive personalised support along the way.

No ridiculous skincare routines. No unnecessarily restrictive diets. And definitely no promises that drinking celery juice will magically fix your face. Just a considered, individual approach to understanding your acne and helping your skin move in the right direction.

Because sometimes, the answer isn't another serum, it's finally having someone help you understand what your skin actually needs.
